Before stretching, it is recommended to take several minutes to warm up lightly by walking or jogging. Stretching with great care and slowing ensure that there is not bouncing. Keeping the stretched position will ease any tension that is felt. If the tension is still felt then adjust to a stretched position that is more comfortable. Following is 5 easy steps of stretching exercise.

Steps 1: Stretching the Calf, Soleus, Achilles

Stretching Exercise - Step 1

Calf Stretch: Stand about 1 foot before the wall. Using forearms lean on the wall and rest head on hands. Using one leg, bend and ground it before you and the other leg behind standing straight.  Move hips slowly forward until straight leg’s calf feels a strain. Ensure the straight foot’s toe is pointing straight and the foot grounded. No bouncing. Repeat with right leg.

Reason: Loosen the joints and muscle
Repetition suggestion: 3 times
Duration: 20s/stretch

Achilles & Soleus Stretch: Stand against the wall as stated above. Ensure foot flatly grounded and back leg knee bent. Keep the position for 10 seconds and alternate legs. A slight stretch is only needed.

Reason: Regains and maintains flexibility of the ankle.
Repetition suggestion: 3 times
Duration: 10s/stretch

Steps 2: Hip & Upper Hamstring Stretch

Stretching Exercise - Step 2

Sit with back against a wall to stretching hip and upper hamstrings. Using one hand to hold the ankles outside and the other hand with forearm positioned around the bent knee. In one motion pull entire leg gently close to the chest, the back of upper leg will have a slight stretch feeling. Ensure leg is pulled so that the knee does not feel any stress.

Reason: Loosen the joints and muscle
Repetition suggestion: 3 times
Duration: 10-15s/stretch

Steps 3: Stretching the right Quadriceps & Front of hip

Stretching Exercise - Step 3

Right Quadriceps Stretch: Bend right leg while sitting and place right heel just outside right hip. Bend left leg and position left feetsoleinside upper section of right leg. (Ensure right leg is not on over to the outside while sitting in the position.) Slowly and gently lean back while keeping straight. A slight stretch will be felt in the right quadriceps.

Reason: Use hands for support and balance. If the stretch is painful, don’t hold it.
Repetition suggestion: 3 times
Duration: 30s

Front Hip stretch: After completing a quad stretch; go to sitting position with bent right leg, with right heel positioned just outside right hip. Turn the hip over and tighten the right side buttocks. This stretches the hip’s front and. Relax the right buttocks after keeping it tightened for 5 – 8 seconds.

Reason: Thoroughly stretches the upper thigh
Repetition suggestion: 3 times
Duration: 15s/stretch

Steps 4: Stretching Right Leg Hamstrings & Diagonally

Stretching Exercise - Step 4

Right Leg Hamstring Stretch: Place right leg in straight position while sitting as in previous stretch. The left leg’s sole should  touch the inside of straightening right leg. Gently lean hips forward, stretching right leg’s hamstring. This is an easy and relaxing stretch. Touch the toes on foot if can’t be comfortably done using a towel by can be used to help with stretching by and placing it around the sole of the foot

Reason: Loosens muscles and joints
Repetition suggestion: 3 times
Duration: 30s/stretch

Diagonal stretch: Right foot’s toes and ankle should be relaxed and foot kept upright and while diagonally stretching.  Left foot toes should be kept pointing as the right arm is extended. Stretch as far as possible with. Relax and repeat procedure with left arm and right leg.

Reason: Loosens muscles and joints
Repetition suggestion: 3 times
Duration: 5s/stretch

Steps 5: Stretching Arms, Back, Head and Neck

Stretching Exercise - Step 5

The Neck, Back and Shoulder Stretch: Intertwine fingers behind head then rest arms floor. Bring neck, shoulder and head forward with the arm’s power for a mild stretch.

Reason: Loosens muscles and joints
Repetition suggestion: 3 times
Duration: 5s/stretch.
Suggestion: Don’t overstretch

The final stretch is done either sitting or standing. With palms facing up intertwine fingers above head. Push arms up and back slightly. The stretch can be felt in upper back, shoulders and arms. Keep the position for 15 seconds. Hold a bike or anything in front hands shoulder-width apart for support, keep relaxed and strengthen the arms. Move chest downwards with feet kept under hips. Knees should be kept bent slightly.

Reason: Loosens muscles and joints
Repetition suggestion: 3 times
Duration: 30s/stretch

You have spent your little savings to buy yourself a brand new bike for your casual rides. Generally, your bike means a lot to you and losing it will make you sick and hinders much important progress.  I bet losing it in other way cannot be of much pain than letting it stolen. It is therefore important to have basic theft prevention measures at your finger tips to safeguard your bike from theft.

1. Never offer a ride to a stranger

This is the simplest way of losing your bike. One can politely ask you for a ride and upon letting him; he cycles it fast and disappear with it. You will be left calling back with no response. Your bike is no more! Unbelievable! Isn’t it? Alternatively, one can ask you to give him a lift on your bike carrier and then turns to be violent to you, taking control of your bike and take off with it. In this case, dare to say NO to stranger or any other friends that you do not know them.

2. Give your bike physical identity

There are several ways in doing this. You can brand your bike with a very unique mark. A good mark is the one you can identify it yourself and no one else. As a way of example, you can have a scratched symbol at the frame area, the seat post or even at the handle bar. You can do this by using a sharp object. Make sure the mark is permanent and easy to trace. These marks will help you to easily identify your bike whenever it is stolen or mixed up with other bikes of the same model.

Another way of giving it an identity is by painting it at rare physical areas. Think of painting it at the bottom of the seat, the edges of the handle, the frame joint etc. Paint it sparingly so that it will be hard for someone to conclude that it’s a mark for identifying your bike.

3. Consider safe parking areas

In most shopping outlets and major business premises in Malaysia, there are no designated parking areas for bikes. Some of these areas are under security watch while others are not. Try to identify the much secured places to park your bike. A parking area located at an open accessible place where people move freely is much safer than a hidden parking. You can even offer a token to a trust worthy person who is just at the parking area to act as a security checker for your bike. This will motivate him/her to be vigil on it. He can be someone who is tending to his business, someone waiting for a certain appointment or even a watchman. Essentially, observe any notice given at a certain parking “Bikes are parked at owner’s risk”.

4. Avoid over exposure of your bike at home where necessary

Statistics shows most riders’ bikes are stolen when the owners are not at home. Bike thieves are normally mostly attracted to some bike features that lure them to steal. You can shun the thieves away by ensuring that you keep your bike indoors ever especially when you are either travelling overseas or you have no regular use of it. By doing this, passerby thieves will not be able to trace your bike. Exposing your bike also gives a thief a chance to study the best way possible to steal it.

5. Use enhanced locking devices

In most bike theft incidences, bikes are stolen due to weak locking systems that offer easy access in breaking them. Thieves find it easier to hammer down a lock in seconds to free the bike and have a quick ride on it. This can be a thing of the past if one acquires much secured locks that can never be tampered in any way. A good bike lock should be firm, stable and unbreakable by any means of applied force.

Important Clue:  Never ever leave your bike unlocked in whichever place even at your own home area.

Additional Tips

Simple ideas on confirming your stolen bike

  • Keep safely all your documentations that you were given on purchase of your bike e.g. cash receipt, warranty (if any) and any relevant presentation that you can produce to prove ownership.
  • Always be in a position to identify your own made marks on your bike and have a good explanation on how you came up with them. For example, you can confidently say “my bike has a paint patch on the mudguard, at the edges of the handle and at the frame joints,” of which you can prove by showing them up.

Most of the bikes in our store whether is MTB, ROAD BIKE, HYBRID BIKE, FOLDING BIKE, CITY BIKE are equipped with SHIMANO / SRAM bike gear components. Your bike may equipped with Shimano/Sram 18 speed (spd), 21spd, 24spd, 27spd, 30spd, etc. The greater the number the speed, the more gear combinations you can have. Use the bike gear effectively allows you ride the bike further and faster.

Type of bike gear shifters

What is your bike shifter?
There are few types of gear shifter in market namely, THUMB shifter, GRIP shifter,  TRIGGER shifter, Flight Deck shifter (road bike). You must know how to use the gear shifters in order to shift the chain to different gears.
(NOTE: Do not to shift gear when bicycle is not moving)

How to calculate those 21speed / 24 speed bike?

For example, your bike has 24 speed gears which has 3 gears [1 2 3 ] in Front Cogs (Chainwheel) and 8 gears [1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8] in REAR Cogs (cassette sprocket / freewheel).

FRONT gear [1] can pair with REAR gears [1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8] FRONT gear [2] can pair with REAR gears [1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8] FRONT gear [3] can pair with REAR gears [1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8]

Speed = Gear combinations.

How to Use Trigger Shifter

What are the functions of FRONT and REAR gears?

Left hand side gear shifter control the FRONT gears  [1 2 3] Right hand side gear shifter control the REAR gears [1 2 3 4 5 6 7  * ] .

* Smaller number means LOW gear, larger number means HIGH Gear.

What gear combinations should I be in?
Low gear combinations: FRONT gear [1], REAR gears [1 2 3 4 ] Medium gear combinations: FRONT gear [2], REAR gears [4 5 6 7] High gear combinations: FRONT gear [3], REAR gears [4 5 6 7 8]

Why can not use FRONT gear [1] pair with REAR gears [4 5 6 7 8]?
You can use that combinations, but it can weaken the drive chain as it is running curve line (see last image below).

* Above sample for 24 speed (3 x 8) MTB Bike.

Bike Gear Combinations - High Bike Gear Combinations - Low Bike Gear Combinations - Medium

Bike Gear Combinations - DONT

What are the effect of using HIGH, MEDIUM, LOW gear combinations?
High gear –  Heavy in pedaling (low cadence) but bike move fast (normally flat road).
Medium gear –  Slight lighter than high gear, but bike move slower (normally leisure ride).
Low gear – Light in pedaling (high cadence) but bike move slow (normally slope or uphill).

Cadence = Pedaling Speed. * Pedaling speed is depending your legs strength

What gear combinations for beginner rider?
Medium
gear. Put middle gear constant to [2] and just shifter the rear gear [4 5 6]. You will feel the slight heavier when you shift the gear from 4 to 5 or 5 to 6.

TIPS: If you feel heavy in pedaling, just shift the right gear to smaller number. If you feel light in pedaling, just shift the gear to larger number.

Firstly, transport the bike without using any transport rack / carrier. For those driving SUV, MPV, Truck car has not issue on this. How about car type like sedan? Sedan car users need to put extra effort and careful to prevent bike scratches the car body.

So how?

For 16″/20″ bike, you can keep the bike in the car boot or passenger seat easily.

Step 1: Enter from left door
Step 2: Place a carton paper/carpet on top the car seat/car cushion
Step 3: Bike rear wheel get in first (rear wheel on top the seat)
Step 4: Push until the end
Step 5: Front wheel will be on the floor
Step 6: If there anything that may poke the cushion (middle chain wheel, stand), place the thicker carton paper on it

NOTE: Put thicker paper or carpet just below the chain.

For 24″/26″ or larger wheel, you can only put the bike into car boot.

Step 1: Move all the stuffs to both sides of the car boot, make sure middle area is empty
Step 2: Prepare two large and thick carton papers/floor mat, and a long string (Nylon)
Step 3: One on top the car boot, the other one would be on top the bicycle
Step 4: Rear wheel get in first (NOTE: Gear components must be facing on top)
Step 5: Turn the pedals (bottom one) to face to you
Step 6: Turn the handler (front wheel facing on top)
Step 7: Put the carton paper on top the bike frame/handle/wheels whichever touching the car boot cover
Step 6: Use the strip to tighten up

Do you feel troublesome?

1.Allen Key (RM 29 – RM 49)

It is also know as Hex key. It comes with the hexagonal or folding types. Hexagonal type only comes with 3 common sizes (3 , 4, 5), whereas folding type comes with various sizes. The most common we tune your bike is hexagonal type, in our store, we used to called triangle type to our customer 🙂

Usage:
– Handle bar / stem adjustment
– Brake lever angle adjustment
– Brake pads positioning /Disc brakes

29″ MTB is also known as 29er. It is 3 inches larger than the traditional 26″ mtb wheel size. When come across of performance of the bike whether 26″ and 29″ wheel size, it is always come to the debate among the cyclists. Different cyclist has different experience, views and perceptions. If you are good in physics/science, you may know the pros & cons of riding 29″ MTB bike. Let’s see what are the pros & cons of 29er MTB.

Pros:
  • Larger wheels roll over obstacles more easily due to decrease in approach angle
  • The larger diameter wheels have more angular momentum so they lose less speed to obstacles and rough sections
  • 29″ bikes tend to offer taller riders a more “natural” frame geometry
Cons:
  • Increased wheel weight and rotating mass (the spokes, rim, and tire are all larger) makes the wheels harder to accelerate and harder to brake
  • More force needed to change steering angle due to greater mass and longer contact patch.
  • Longer spokes and decreased angle between hub flange and rim result in a more laterally flexible wheel (all else equal).
  • Many types of bicycle tires, tires, rims, forks do not come in 29″-compatible versions, though the expanding popularity of the size is reducing this problem.

Quick release (QR) levers to facilitate common tasks such as front wheel removal and seat height adjustment. When properly adjusted, quick release levers are both safe and convenient, but you must understand and apply the correct technique to adjust them properly before riding your bicycle to prevent serious injury or death from a fall. In this post, we share some useful tips of using bike quick release skewer/lever.

Quick release lever is common uses in
[arrowlist]
  • Seat clamp
  • Front / Rear Wheel hubs
  • Handle bar (folding bike)
[/arrowlist]
Understand the quick release stucture

1 x  Adjusting nut | 2 x Springs | 1 x Thin axle with Quick Release Lever

Understand the CLOSE position and OPEN position

How to loosen the wheel?

Step 1: Pull out the lever from closed position to open position.
Step 2: Hold the quick release lever and turn the adjusting nut. (Counter clockwise direction)
Step 3: Turn the adjusting nut (counter clockwise) until the gap between the nut and fork legs has sufficient space to take out the wheel.
(note: Not necessary to turn the adjusting nut until the end)

How to fasten the wheel?

Step 1: Make sure the quick release lever is open position.
Step 2: Turn the adjusting nut clockwise until the gap between the nut and fork legs has reduced.
Step 3: Press in the quick release lever using your palm with little extra force to close position.
Step 4: If you feel pressing force is “light”. Open the lever again and repeat the step 1 and step 2.

[box_warning]
  • Securely clamping the wheel takes considerable force. If you can fully close the quick release lever without wrapping your fingers around the fork blad for leverage, and the lever does not leave a clear imprint in the palm of your hand, the tension is insufficient. Open the lever, turn the tension adjusting nut clockwise a quarter turn, then try again.
  • If the lever cannot be pushed all the way to a position parrallel to the fork blade, return the lever to the OPEN position. The turn the adjusting nut counterclockwise one-quearter and try tightening the lever again.
[/box_warning]

NOTE: These steps are applicable to rear wheel and quick release seat clamp

Quick Check

[infolist]
  • Ensure the wheel is fully attached to the fork dropouts/ bike frame.
  • Ensure the quick release lever in closed position and tigh.
  • Ensure the wheel does not loose after closed the lever.
[/infolist]
How about if your bike wheel hubs / seatpost doesnt has quick release lever?

Good news. We able to tranform your bike wheel hub (suggest: MTB wheel ‘s front hub) from non-quick release to become a quick release type. Cost estimate: RM 45.

Many cyclists are care less on their current size of bicycle tire until they need to replace a new tube or tires (DIY). Two numbers that most important to determine the bicycle tires and tube sizes. Most common number we seen is

26″ x 1.95 , 26″ x 2.125, 16″x1.75, 20″x2.125, 700x23c, 700x20c

For example 26″ x 1.95 (kids bike – MTB)

26″ = The diameter of the rims
1.95 = The width of the tires (greater number means wider the width of tires)

For example  700x23c (road bike/fixie/hybrid)
700 = Diameter of the rims
23c = Width of the tires (greater the number, wider the width of tires)

Special case like (trolley, wheelchair, old style city bike) The tire sizes would be like stated like 24″ x 1 3/8. Usually, we have to strictly follow this tires size for replacement.

Where to check the wheel size?
Very simple. Every information of the bicycle tire imprinted on the sidewall of the bicycle tire. Look carefully, you sure can find it. Lastly, a proper replacement of tube size (diameter x width) to fit into the tire would enable the tube last longer. E.g If you tire size is 26″x1.95. You have to find a replacement tube which is similar size as your tire. You may replace a tube like range from 26″x1.9   – 26″x2.125.

What if no imprint numbers on the sidewall?
Just bring the whole rims if can not manage to take out the tires and tubes.

So, when you want to purchase tube from bicycle store, just tell them your bicycle wheel diameter and width of the size.

Rusty bike and components can cause the bike turns to be ugly and uncomfortable to ride.  You may hate the bike as it is get dirty or ugly and end up keep the bike aside. Since metal can develop the rust easily when exposed to air or humidity environment, hence, we must have some good habits for taking care the bike from rust to develop.

1st habit
When the bike is wet after the ride, you must keep the bike in dry condition. The bike is more easily to clean up at the wet condition compare with dry condition. Components like cables, spokes, rims, nuts, etc which are the component expose to air easily. Don’t feel dirty while cleaning your bike, wear the rubber gloves to prevent dirt and mud stuck into your nails.

2nd habit
Always cover up the bike when it is not in use. Before you store your bike in store room, make sure the bike is dry and not dirty. By doing so, you could guarantee the bike is ready to ride for the next ride. In addition, you can ensure your store room is under clean condition.

3RD habit
Once you saw a little rust on the metal, means the rust is spreading. Use the grit wet sandpaper to rub the rusted area. Do not buy low grade sandpaper as it could damage surface of the frame/components though can remove the rust easily. After that, clean it with WD-40 for further remove the tiny rust. Lastly, polish or touch up the area with paint if needed.
Advices:
– sand paper grade should be 500 and above.
– if no store room for bike storage, get the “lorry” cover plastic sheet from hardware shop to cover the bicycle like how you cover your lovely car.
– if the rusty area in very bad condition, you have last option to replace the components.
