Indoor cycling or workout are getting popular recently due to the current Covid-19 lock down in most countries. Indoor cycling has become the new normal sport activities to everyone. Cyclists are still capable to ride virtually with even more cyclist around the world as well as join a workout session with professional team riders. Here are simple tips of setting your own indoor cycling workout station.

Screen / Projection

For more immersive virtual indoor cycling, bigger screen is better. The easiest setup is using Apple TV / Tablet / Smart Phone as Zwift compatible to both Ios & Android OS. You can mirror the screen from your smart phone to TV (MUST smart TV).

Apple TV / Smart Phone / Tablet – lesser cable and faster setup time
Desktop / Laptop – more cables and more setup time
Projector – more cables, longer setup time

NOTE: Play a workout background music in low volume so overlap the sound from the trainers and virtual tire sound from Zwift app.

Space Area

We recommend area size at least width 1500mm and length range 2500mm to 3000mm. It sufficient to put a computer table (1200 x 600mm) / tablet stand, training mat, bicycles and indoor bike trainer.  You may put a long stool (at least height 800mm) to keep remote control, drink, power gel, phone and etc.

Power Plugs & Wiring

You need to spare at least 3-4 plugs to power up your devices such as smart trainer, computer, and smart phone / tablet charger.  Normally smart trainer provide 1.5m power adapter. Keep the power cable hide under the floor mat so you won’t step on those cables while get off from bike. Excessive length of wires can tidy with Velcro or cable tie.

Air circulation

Athlete needs a fresh air to keep the workout going on and boost their endurance. Indoor has limited of air circulation compare to outdoor. Hence, setup the workout station near to windows is more preferable. If windows is not an option, turn on the table fan / ceiling fan. Slow speed of fan is necessary to keep the air flowing instead of trap in the room.

Sharing Area

If you sharing the area with your kids or someone, you have to make sure your workout session does not disturb their daily activities such as plug-in the USB cable, using the computer, taking toys out from the box, walking pass by, etc. Make sure the workout space is fully dedicated for over 2-3 hours ride without interruption.

Decorations

Show-off your finisher medals / event jerseys on the wall with long bar that you can get from IKEA. If you have some great photos, print and frame it out. So it will motivate you to ride even better during indoor cycling.

Restore the setup

Some of you may temporary use study room or living room to become indoor cycling area. You have to think simple way to get the workout area back to original state. Steps involve such as store the bike, store the bike trainers, roll out the training mat, tidy the wiring and electronic devices. Setup need to be simple and easily done. Ideally setup time 5-10 mins.

It is pretty remarkable how the mobile phone has evolved from a communication device to a powerful, portable computer. With the innovation and invention of various apps and services, smartphones have become an invaluable part of our lives. There are apps available that perform or simulate the roles of several tools, including the bike computer. But is using your phone as a bike computer really the better option? Let’s take a look at the differences between the two.

Price

Cycle computers come with a countless array of features. Naturally, cycle computer prices vary depending on what you’re looking for. You could fork up around RM79 (i.e. Cateye Velo 7) for a basic model or several hundred Ringgits for an advanced version (smart). On the other hand, smartphone cycling apps (i.e. STRAVA) could charge one-time or subscription fees, which may end up more cost in the long run. Furthermore, there is always the risk you might crash, and if your phone gets damaged in the process, you will have to spend a lot more replacing it than on a bike computer.

Size & Screen Visibility

Bigger is not always better. Smartphones are certainly superior in terms of size, but our phones are designed for indoor use, so you’ll have to turn the brightness way up to view them outdoors. Bike computers have the advantage of high-contrast screens made for use in the bright sunlight. Their relatively compact size also saves space on your handlebars.

Battery Life

If you participate in long-distance rides, long battery life bike computer is necessary. With the cycling app, GPS service and other background processes running on your phone, it is battery will be drained fast. But if you only ride your bike for short commutes, or 30 minutes to an hour of exercise, battery life is not an issue for using smart phone.

In the event of an emergency, you have to always keep the smart phone battery is sufficient level. Using a bike computer spares you the inconvenience of being in this situation and carry a battery bank & cables.

Durability

Malaysia is known to have unpredictable weather. Even if your device is waterproof, the tropical heat and sweat would damage your phone fairly quickly. Touchscreens are also difficult to use when wet. While you could purchase a weatherproof phone case to solve this problem, most bike computers are already weatherproof. Some even come with buttons so you don’t need to scroll over a slippery, wet touchscreen.

Accuracy Data

Bike computers have a variety of sensors (Speed, cadence & power) dedicated to collecting your biking data. A smartphone certainly won’t have sensors as powerful or accurate as a bike computer. However, these sensors can be an expensive hassle to purchase and set up. If you only bike casually these won’t be necessary. What is really important is location accuracy. Dedicated GPS bike computers have far more reliable sensors than most mobile phones. This could come in handy on longer rides through relatively unfamiliar areas.

How Often & Why You Ride

Cyclists riding for training purposes should definitely invest in a bike computer. It has better accuracy calculation which means revealing more quality insights. Casual bikers who cycle short distances once or twice a week need not spend on a higher tier bike computer (non-smart). Keep in mind, though, that mobile phones can be a distraction on the road. Meanwhile, bike computers guarantee you a safer, smoother ride with no calls or texts to take your eyes off the road.

Function

While smartphones are designed to be multi-functional, bike computers are made solely for cycling purposes. They have the hardware and software specifically to assist you during your ride.

So, should you use a phone or bike computer? There is no 100% better option between the two, but now that you know the differences, you can make an informed decision based on your lifestyle and cycling habits. If you wish to invest in a bike computer, shop online here at USJ Cycles online store.

Cycling enthusiasts, listen up, the RHB Langkawi Ride 2020 is back! On the 11th of April, race hundreds of fellow bikers through the breathtaking backdrop of Pulau Langkawi at one of Malaysia’s premier cycling competitions. There are three categories of varying difficulty for cyclists of all experience levels: 25km, 75km, and 100km. Be one of the first five to finish in the latter two categories to win some prize money for your hard work!

Road Bike

Long-distance road cycling is no easy task, so prepare yourself for the journey with the right equipment. The first thing you need, of course, is a road bike – the ideal bike for a road cycling race. Road bikes are comfort geometry, lightweight, streamlined, and generally have wheels of large diameter with smooth, narrow tires, giving them the speed advantage over other kinds of bicycles on paved surfaces. Road bike brands that are popular among cycling enthusiasts include Trek, Giant, Cube and Marin.

Bike Helmet

You’re also going to need a bike helmet, which is a requirement for participating in this competition. Besides preventing any potential head injuries, it’ll help keep your head sheltered from the unpredictable Malaysian weather while you’re on the road.

Cycling Shoes

Also, consider investing in a pair of road bike shoes. Their stiff build and snug fit aren’t just comfortable but will maximize your efficiency while cycling – especially important for long-distance races like this. Most road bike shoes have cleats on the soles that can be attached to clipless pedals, locking your foot in to further increase efficiency and make the most out of your stamina.

Cycle Computer

A bike computer is another handy tool to have on hand. The most basic models record just speed, distance and time for analytical purposes, while higher-tech models come GPS-equipped to help you navigate.

Bike Safety Lightings

Finally, you’ll need bicycle lights, both front and rear. These will make you considerably more visible to other road users, and if it rains, illuminate the road ahead.

Once you’ve gotten geared up and ready for the event, register by the 29th of February to participate. For more information, check out the route maps to know what you’re getting into and visit the RHB Langkawi Ride 2020 official website. Not sure where to shop for all this equipment? Fret not, USJ Cycles has all the high-quality gear you need. Prep yourself for the RHB Langkawi Ride 2020 at USJ Cycles now!

Planning to burn off those excessive calories, but too lazy to head to the gym? There’s a fun and equally healthy alternative, which is to get yourself a bicycle and go cycling whenever you have time! Let’s take a look at how you can lose weight through this fun and beneficial activity.

Cycling is incredibly efficient when it comes to burning calories and body fat, for beginners and veterans alike. Just an hour of cycling can burn 400 to 1000 calories, depending on the intensity at which you cycle and your body weight.

The advantage of cycling, however, compared to going to the gym, is that it’s arguably more enjoyable. Picture yourself outdoors, wind in your face, the world a blur around you. Cycling is a fun activity, it’s not just pure exercise, making it easier and faster to lose weight when the process is enjoyable. As with any form of exercise, cycling helps with muscle gain, especially in the glutes, hamstrings, quads and calves.

The more muscle you build, the easier it’ll be to lose weight.

To best supplement your weight loss and energize you for the exercise, you need a healthy, balanced diet. Extra carbohydrates will fuel you with the additional energy that strenuous exercise requires, and generous portions of protein will aid with muscle gain and your recovery. Practice self-discipline and stay away from foods high in saturated fats, as they contribute greatly to weight gain. As a good example of a healthy meal: a bowl of pasta topped with a lean meat-based sauce, and salad on the side.

Speaking of discipline, much will be needed if you wish to achieve your weight loss goals. Consistency is key—stick to a structured exercise plan, even though the lifestyle changes may be difficult. Just be careful to avoid over training, as it’ll damage your body instead of developing it. Another major lifestyle change you’ll need to adopt is to get enough sleep (at least six to eight hours a night). Not only is sufficient sleep essential to your recovery, it can help you lose weight further!

Choosing a bicycle for losing weight not necessary to be very fancy and complicated. Get yourself a bicycle from the wide variety available at USJ Cycles and experience the health benefits of cycling!

Trek using CFD analyzes to identify drag reduction opportunities to improve aerodynamic performance. The new Madone was to maintain aerodynamic drag performance within 30g across an average -12.5 – 12.5 yaw sweep (the most common yaw to rider in real world).

With the addition of disc brakes to the model line, new fit requirements, new comfort technologies (ISO Speed), updated component aesthetics and creating one of the lightest aero bikes in the market; Trek was still faced with a great challenge to maintain aerodynamic performance.

Figure 2. Wind Tunnel Results (SD LSWT, April 2018) Run 101 new Madone (Blue) vs. Run 107 current Madone (Green), bikes with pedaling mannequin + 2 water bottles.

WEIGHT

Bike weight is a tangible feature that athletes and consumers greatly care about. Creating all-around aero racing bikes requires a delicate balance of aerodynamics, frame stiffness and by extension of those two, the bike’s weight.

Trek worked closely with suppliers to ensure that every detail of the new Madone’s carbon component laminates were scrutinised to help achieve bike weight targets. The effort resulted in a bike that is fast and light as the current Madone.

The rim brake bike matches the current Madone (7.1 kg), and the all new disc brake bike that weighs in at 7.5 kg, depending on paint scheme.

MADONE ADJUSTABLE COMPLIANCE TECHNOLOGY

ADJUSTABLE TOP TUBE ISOSPEED

The NEW Madone has rotated Adjustable Compliance technology into the top tube comprised of two frame elements integrated into each other. This method also aids in more uniform compliance for all frame sizes. In addition, Trek has implemented hardware on the back of the seat tube that offers rebound damping characteristics to the bike.

The benefit of this technology is the ability to closely match the vertical compliance values across all frame sizes. On typical road bikes, vertical compliance values on smaller bike frames produce stiffer results and gradually decrease in stiffness with increasing frame size.

DAMPER

Trek introduces a damper to the system to help control rebound of the seatmast. When a large excitation (impact event) was introduced on previous IsoSpeed frame designs, riders would experience the main benefit of the technology through a large deflection of the seatmast that promotes a comfort benefit.

By implementing a damper to the IsoSpeed system, Trek can control and reduce this rebound that riders may experience.

Treadmil Testing

Treadmill testing allows Trek to change the surfaces to replicate various road conditions such as large pothole or bump, chip seal, gravel and cobbles are some of the various conditions that Trek can reproduce in a controlled
environment.

Trek set out to define how the new Madone behaves compared to the current Madone with a damping ratio. A damping ratio is a common dimensionless measure to describe how oscillatory systems decay after an excitation.

Outcome, the new Madone offers anywhere from a 44–61% increase in the damping ratio.

FIT

Trek previously previous generation Madone bar/stem combination in H1 & H2 fit frame were somewhat limited and expensive investment to make a change to a new bar/stem combo compared to what customers can choose on other Trek road models like Emonda and Domane.

Trek introduces the H1.5 Fit on frames, more stem options, an additional bar size and +/-5degrees of bar roll for the new Madone. With this new fit update, Trek offers one of the broadest spectrums of possible fits for men and women with an integrated cockpit.

Splitting the bar and stem into two pieces was the best and most obvious solution but Trek also needed to maintain aero requirements.

Two-piece clam shell design headset spacer allows for easy addition or removal without rerouting any housing or cables after bike build. Updates to the spacers include a reduction in visible parting lines, one piece design and remove NDS cutout for the rear rim brake routing on the current Madone.

BRAKE SYSTEM

The biggest change on the rim brake bike from the current Madone is the front brake position. Trek enhance the Madone’s aero benefits by placing the front brake on the back of the fork so that it seamlessly integrates with the fork and down-tube form.

In disc brake version, Trek bonded in a routing tube to easily push the brake hose from the fork leg up to the steer tube for a trouble- and tool-free experience. The new disc brake Madone frame and fork tyre clearance is designed for 28 C tyres in saleable form to comply with ISO tyre-clearance
regulations.

SEATPOST

The seatpost head continues to use an independent pinch bolt and rail clamp system to allow for infinite tilt and setback adjustment. Trek has integrated safety into the design, a Flare R light mount has been designed to clip onto the back of the seatpost head and offers a clean and integrated look.

Control Center

The control centre has been relocated to the aero optimized down tube water bottle position. The water bottle cage itself is mounted to the control centre as well. On mechanical set-ups, the control centre houses both the front and rear derailleur.

For electronic set-ups, the control centre locates the Di2 battery and junction B box in one location, and no longer houses the charge port, which has been relocated to the
handlebar end. The control centre also accommodates the rear disc brake hose to prevent rattling in the downtube.

TREK SEGAFREDO VALIDATION

The Trek Segafredo team was used several times throughout the development process of the new Madone to ensure that the bike offered athletes and consumers an advantage over its competitors, as well as against the current Madone.

A second major test ride was held in Mallorca in January 2018, resulting that Madone prototypes has confirmed provide best-in-class ride handling and the new H1.5 geometry/fit was optimal.

When will be available in stock?

New Trek Madone will be available in store in August / September 2018. If you wish to have a pre-book of New Trek Madone SLR 6 , please email to marketing@usjcycles.com

With our hot and super humid tropical weather in Malaysia, the idea of cycling at night or very early in the morning is the only option for many of us! Nevertheless, safety should always be our number one priority when riding our bikes, so here are ten tips for riding in the dark.

1. Lights

We highly recommend you attach a high visibility and quality rear safety lightings to either your seat post or your right seat stay. Cateye Omni 3 a most simple durable LED rear safety light give sufficient visibility and attention of drivers. There are other high range of rear safety lightings, but these usually higher intensity, longer operating hour and rechargeable. Don’t skimp on your safety!

2. Wear a brightly colored cycling kit

In some countries in Europe it is required for bicycle riders to wear at all times a fluorescent green or yellow vest for visibility. Malaysian road regulations don’t have such requirements, but it makes sense to wear a light-colored cycling wear while cycling at night. Even better, nowadays you can find clothing, gloves, cycling shoes, helmets and many other accessories and bits of kit that have some sort of reflective paint or fabric on them.

3. More lights

Earlier mentioned lights are more to be seen rather than to see. In order for you to see clearly where you’re going, you’ll need a bicycle headlight. Once again, these are not required by JPJ (Malaysia Road Traffic Authority) but it only makes sense to want to see where you’re going. For poorly to moderately lit city scenes it’s recommended to have a front light with at least 200 lumens (Cateye Volt 200XC) in a well-focused beam. Many lights have multiple modes where you can set the intensity of the beam so you decide what best suits your riding style and environment.

4. Reflective sidewall tires

If you’re not on a road bike and you’re commuting on your bike, most manufacturers have tires with reflective sidewalls for commuter bikes. Schwalbe’s Marathon Plus has a highly reflective strip which is very visible when crossing streets or switching lanes on your bike. These tires are normally fitted on hybrid/commuter bikes but in some cases, they can be also found or fitted to mountain bikes.

5. Reflectors

Most of riders remove the reflectors that attached on wheels, handlebar and seat post. Admittedly they’re quite unsightly in some bikes, especially on road bikes and higher end models of other bikes. But reflectors come in a variety of forms, some you can attach to your rims as a sticker and look like part of a nice wheelset sticker branding. Companies like 3M make reflective tape which you can cut out or get in pre cut shapes that attach to your frame, helmet and other accessories.

6. Reflective material bike bags

If you’re commuting to work or university, there are purpose-built (bike messenger bags) bike bags or saddle bags. These bags often are water proof and have reflective bottom strips that are right on the most visible point of the bag when riding. These bags also have stabilizing straps so that they don’t dance around you when you’re cycling to keep a safe and snug fit throughout your journey. Product ref. Topeak Wedge Dry Bag

7. Mirrors

It makes the bike looks less sporty, BUT, for safety reason, side mirrors is very practical and useful. Normally they come attached to a rubber strap that can be attached to your fork, down tube, end of your top bar or end of your drop bar. These will help you ride with more confidence knowing if there are any vehicles right behind you and help you anticipate if you need to perform an evasive maneuver to protect yourself out on the road. Product ref. Guee Side Mirror

8. Ride with the direction traffic

We often tend to think that because we’re on a bike we can just go against the traffic. After all, we’re riding on the shoulder of the road, bike lane or sidewalk. However, in most places the shoulder of the road is too narrow and you could startle oncoming traffic or be visible to them too late. It is harder to maneuver against an obstacle when it’s coming at you rather than if it was moving along your direction so it’s strongly recommended to avoiding riding against the flow of traffic.

9. Be predictable

It is very dangerous to ride on the road if drivers don’t know what you’re up to. Always look behind you (on your right, because you’re a responsible rider and go with the flow of traffic!) and see if there are cars near you before approaching an intersection and make sure they’re not going to cut ahead in front of you. If they do, be prepared to stop since some drivers aren’t going to stop for you. Always signal when you will make a turn left or right by waving the corresponding hand so that drivers know what your intentions are and are prepared to slow down for you and always be alert when you do your maneuvers. One more tip, as part of this point. Maneuver with confidence; signal and if safe, immediately start executing your maneuver. If you hesitate you could confuse other road users and risk yourself to getting into an accident.

10. Ride in groups

If you’re riding at night, try to avoid cycling at peak hours to avoid large volumes of traffic while out on the road. It is also a good idea, and arguably a lot more fun if you ride in group since all of you collectively become immediately more visible than just one person riding by themselves. Avoid busy highways or stretches of road and always stick to the edge of the road.

Bike frame geometry is key important part while choosing bike. It helps to predict how does the bike handles, riding position and performance. It also be useful when you are planning to change a new bike frame.

Different brand bikes has different bike geometry. Hence, understanding of bike geometry will benefit you when comparing different bikes and manufacturers (brands).

Every bike frame has frame size sticker whether in numeric and alphabet. Alphabet size naming such as S / M / L / XL whereas numeric could be in inch (usually on mtb) or cm (on road / touring / cs)

To solve this puzzle, following are the key important parts of frame geometry everyone should know.

Frame size
Different bike manufacturers (brands) will name bike size in different way whether it be via alphabet like XS, S, M, etc. or in numeric measurement like 49cm, 52cm, etc. But to represent the frame size has not universal or governed by standard. Hence bike frame geometry is important for better understanding of frame size.

Effective Top Tube (ETT)
“Effective” top tube is referring to horizontal straight length from head tube to seatpost. This measurement is best way to determine a frame size as frame top tube sloping vary with across brands especially road bike.

Stack & Reach
We put this two terms together as it is related to Effective top tube measurement. Stack is a vertical length from center bottom bracket to top head tube. Reach is a horizontal length from bottom bracket to top head tube.

Endurance bikes (e.g. Specialized Roubaix series, Giant Defy, Cube Attain) will have longer stack and shorter reach than performance road bike (Aero/Sprint/TT) create more comfort handling. Whereas, short stack and longer reach usually applied on performance road bike such as Aero/TT/All-round road bike, result lower frontal profile to improve aerodynamics.

Head Tube Angle & Length
Angel of the head tube affect the steerer responsiveness. Steeper head tube angle create fast responsive steerer usually applied on performance MTB / Road bike so that rider can steer handle easily.

Slacker head tube usually applied on urban (Hybrid), touring bike. It create more stable and comfort of handling.

Head Tube length determine how upright riding position. You could not change the riding position much as nature of head tube serve the riding purpose. Example, comparison between endurance road bike, aero road bike, has different head tube length.

Seat Tube Angle & Length
Seat tube angle or length is not a key important part to concern unless rider would like to create a some stand over clearance usually 1-2″ from the top tube.

Wheelbase
Horizontal length from the centre to centre of front and rear wheel. Wheelbase determine the responsiveness, stability and control of the bike.

Long wheelbase – More flex and compliance. Create more comfort and stable in control in slow speed. Usually, long wheelbase geometry design on hybrid bike, touring, cross trail (Casual MTB).

Short wheelbase – Stiff and responsive in control. Usually apply in performance road bike, Time Trail (TT Bike), Aero Bike

Chainstay Length
Longer wheelbase will have longer chain stay length. It create more flex at rear wheel and less vibrations transfer to rider. Hence, it does not steer as quick as short wheelbase.

Long chain stay length applied on urban bikes, hybrid, city bike, etc
Short chain stay length usually applied on performance road bike and mtb

Geometry Comparison Endurance / All-Rounder / Aero

[wpdatatable id=326]

Based on the geometry comparison table, we can see the all-rounder frame (e.g Tarmac) has head tube length which sit between aero (e.g. Allez Sprint) and endurance (e.g. Roubaix). To create comfort and stability, endurance frame geometry has longer wheelbase and stack than the others.

*geometry comparison measurement (mm) is based 52cm size frame from Specialized Roubaix (Endurance), Tarmac (All-Rounder), Allez Sprint (Aero)

Where to get your frame bike geometry information?
Visit the official brand product specification of your bicycle.

Comfort + Stability = Endurance
Responsive Power transfer + Performance = All-rounder
Sprint + Performance = Aero / TT

Essential kits are important to every cyclists especially long distance riding. Weight from essential kits should not be saved as those kits can save you during the emergency such as bike has broken down due to flat tire, chain issue, components alignment.

You can utilize mounting available on your bike to mount the essentials, tool bottle or you can store some quick access kit into jersey pockets. Following are the essential kits you should carry on your bike.

    1. Spare Tube / Patches
You must carry at least 1 unit spare tube or 6pc patches with you. It can save some time to do patching beside the road. Make sure you get a correct size tube, valve length, valve type (sv/fv). Patches will be used when your spare tubes has ran out of stock.
      Storage: Saddle Bag
    2. Tyre levers
2 tyre levers are sufficient to remove tire out from the rim. Don’t be too confident of your existing tire which can easily pull out from the rim without any tool, but try save some energy for next few km ride.
      Storage: Saddle Bag
    3. Hand Pump / Co2 Inflator
Bicycle hand pump is handy but it takes long time to inflate the tube. Co2 canister works like pump, it give rideable pressure and fast. However, if you encounter multiple flats, you need a hand pump to inflate your second flat tyre.
Store: Saddle Bag / Jersey Pocket / Tool Bottle
    4. Multitools
Multitools consist number of commonly used tools such as 4/5/6 allen keys, philips and flat panel for simple adjustment such as brake cable, handle, saddle adjustment, etc. There are some multitools consist full set of tools for detail adjustment such as spoke tensioner, tyre lever, chain cutter. However, the drawback is carry more weight during the ride.
Storage: Saddle Bag /  Tool Bottle
    5. Quick Release Chain Link
Also known as chain quick link chai which about 0.5g mini part to enable you link back a broken chain. Use a multitool (#4) rivet away the
Storage: Saddle Bag /  Tool Bottle
    6. Mobile phone
Call for help from cyclist-mate if you get stuck and more importantly in the case of accident. Emergency contacts have to keep inside the phone case. Using GPS mode during a ride could drain your battery quicker.
      Storage: Jersey Pocket
    7. Cash or card
Stopping by cafe or rest-zone, cash will be useful for buying some drink, energy bar, safe aid kits, etc while waiting someone to picking you up or cab’s. Some cab’s car not allow bringing foods / hot drink into their cars. You can get someone pay for the cab fees when you reach the meeting area.
Storage: Jersey Pocket / Saddle Bag
    8. Foods
Don’s expect a food store available at rest-zone, store may closed unexpectedly. We may misjudge the route and get starving in the middle of ride, hence you have to spare some energy gel / chocolate bars / sweet gummy to boost the last 10 km ride.
      Storage: Jersey pocket
    9. Mini First aid kits
In the case suffer from small cut and scratch, these small lightweight first aid kits wont regret to bring along. Items: water proof plaster x 4, Antiseptic cream, bandage, fabric tape, etc
Storage: Saddle Bag / Jersey pocket
    10. ID card
DIY a small piece of ID card which has your location address, contact, medical information blood category, social media account id so that can reach your friends easily to report the rider conditions, contacts, etc.

Optional kits

  1. Power bank (small in size) – Charging up the dried phone or lightings for night safety
  2. Brake cable – Brake cable make snap unexpectedly.
  3. Gear cable – Applicable for external gear cable routing frame only

Method of storages

Clipless pedals also commonly known as SPD pedals. Transition from normal platform pedals to clipless pedals sound scary. Clipless pedals has been widely used since the victory of Bernard Hinault in tour de france 1985. Clipless pedals has much advantage such as improve the comfort in pedaling, easy climbing uphill, better power transfer as well as reduce injury.

Following are important steps to break your fear of using clipless pedals.

Step 1 : Tension resistance on pedals.
Fully turn counter-clockwise to release tension for easy clip in and out.

Step 2 : Learn engaging the pedal.
When shoe has installed a cleat. You have to get a feel to engage the pedals before you force downward to fully clip-in the pedal.

NOTE: Your shoe will not able to slide forward when engaged (not clip-in) the pedal.

Stand across the frame top tube. Hold the brakes.

Turn left crank-arm at 3 o’clock to engage left side cleat and pedals.
Turn right crank-arm at 3 o’clock to engage right side cleat and pedals.

TIPS: Crankarm at position 2 or 3 o”clock (right crank) is most easy to engage pedal

Step 3 : Learn Clip-in
Once engaged to pedal, cleat is not necessary clip-in immediately as when you step downward (means ready to ride), the cleat will naturally clip-in the pedal.

Step 4 : Learn release cleat from pedal
Immediately clipped in and rotate backward until the crank arm at lowest point (6 o’clock) then bend slight outward your feet to release from pedal. Repeat Step 3 and 4 until you able to clip in and out easily.

Step 5 : Learn clip the other foot in.
If you have mastered left foot, you try on the right foot using Step 3 and 4.

Step 6 : Try both feet
Learn clip in and out beside the wall, table, pillar for you to hold on to learn clip-in using both feet.

Tips: Clip in left foot and pedal backward so that right crankarm is in 3 o’clock to easier clip in as mentioned in step 3.

Step 7: Break the fear, try on the road
You can try clip-in one side and ride forward in short distance without sitting on the saddle then stop the bike.

You are almost there. Try both side clip-in. Clip-in one side at a time follow by another side using the step as learned in Step 3 and Step 5.

Summary, always remember you are using clipless pedals which required to bend your feet outward. Clip out from pedal before the bike has fully stop especially at traffic light.

  • Engage the pedal -> Clip-in
  • Slow down the bike -> bend feet outward to release -> stop

Safety tips ! Do not try on the heavy traffic zone and get familiar the clipless pedals before go actual ride. Ride safe!

Our featured rider Richard Ng this time around is a former radio personality whom you are probably more familiar by the sound of his voice. The man was once the Breakfast Show host on MixFM for the past 11 years and currently he’s still heard frequently on radio and TV commercials as a voice over talent.

His cycling endeavor started exactly about a year back in September 2016 when he was diagnosed in February that year, for Type2 Diabetes (with a reading of 15, that’s three times higher than a normal person) prior to already being on medication for High Cholesterol.

He weighed 105kg then and as you can guess was considered highly obese. His doctor told him if he didn’t do something, he could literally just drop dead of a heart attack!

He’s tried losing weight in the past but in vain until Feb 2016, he said enough is enough and decided to make a lifestyle change.

This is what he did to lose about 28kg in a year and a half since then.

  • To begin with, he changed his diet plan by completely stopping white rice and sugar for about 3 months. Cut down on big dinner portions and just ate clean.
  • Next thing he did was buy himself a pair of sneakers and started to brisk walk at the park as though he was late for the bus.
  • He’d walk for an hour plus or so, until he was drenched in sweat. He’d do it twice a day.
  • After 2-3 months, as his fitness grew he started incorporating slow jogs into his daily routine and as the months went by, he was jogging for about 10km each time.
  • One day a friend told him he could burn a lot more calories if he did some cycling. On hearing this, he went out to USJ Cycles and bought something that would suit his budget.
  • Being a fairly new rider he chose to get the Specialized Allez DSW Elite road bike because he wanted a bike that was well made, durable enough to take a few knocks here and there (being a novice cyclist) and one that wouldn’t cost him an arm and a leg.
  • Since then, there was no looking back as he would diligently ride from his home in Subang USJ all the way to Sri Petaling and back. As he got stronger he added the mileage and always challenged himself for longer rides and a better average speed to improve. He’d ride to as far as Klang and back, especially during the weekends when there’s very little traffic early in the morning. He clocks an average of about 250-300km in a week now and averages a pace of about 31kmh.

  • Exactly a year into this lifestyle change, the results showed up on his yearly medical blood test. His cholesterol level improved remarkably and was taken off medication after years of pill popping, his sugar levels dropped significantly and returned to a healthy reading and no meds were needed, his resting heart rate records an average of 46-48bpm and his blood pressure is 112/74mmHg. His waistline from a size 42″ is now shrunken to a size 34″ and he weighs between 75-77kgs.
  • His path to recovery is so evident that it has inspired and motivated those who know him to follow suit what he did.
  • Being motivated by this, he never fails to encourage and share his experience with anyone who’d like to know how he managed to lose the flab.

RECIPES

  1. Make the decision and tell yourself IT IS a lifestyle change you want and that’s why it’s called just that. Start with ‘baby steps’ because humans were never born to run, so start with walking if you’re an elderly person or considered obese. You’ll be doing your back and knees a big favor.
  2. Cut out carbs, especially white rice and sugar because sugar breaks down easily in your system and instantly gets stored as fat if they’re not used. Change to brown rice if you must but cut your portions down to a fistful only. If you can stop sugar, you’ll see significant changes in a short period of time.
  3. Cycling is good where it’s the only other sport (besides swimming) that doesn’t put strain or impact to your back, knees or joints. Burns off fat much faster compared to many other form of exercises. If you don’t believe me, try it! Lol.
  4. No excuses! Sneak in an hour or so to cycle everyday or alternate days because other than the workout, it’s also something called ‘me time’. Leave everything behind and just exercise. That workout session will guarantee to do your heart and soul a lot of good. Make it a habit and like they say, it only takes 22 times to become a habit.
  5. Constantly keep reminding yourself to never look back in the past but instead, look towards the future and tell yourself that’s where and what YOU want to achieve. Trust me, your past will try to pull you back but put your foot down and just move forward. Again constantly remind yourself, No Excuses.
  6. KISS- Keep It Simple, Stupid. Lol.
Don’t do anything beyond what you can realistically achieve and keep things simple for a start and you will still get the same results. Basically, you’ll be better off doing brisk walking rather than jogging if you don’t have the stamina and you’ll still achieve the same results. A lot of people fail because they put too much on their plate, chewing more than what they can swallow. Celebrate life and welcome the new you. Embrace the lifestyle change with open arms. Remember, life doesn’t have to be complicated.
  7. Go to a trustworthy and reliable bike shop, get to know the shop and have them help you to find the right type of bike for you. Build a relationship with local bike store and they will be ever willing and happy to share with you valuable and sound advice on your cycling journey. They’ll be looking after you and your bike like family.
  8. Be weary of online shopping, you don’t want to put yourself at risk of injury with replicas and fake bike parts. Warranty and product support from brand principle (supplier) is a key of after sales service.

Trying hard to keep your cycling activities normal during Ramadan without compromising the stamina and fitness? Following are some useful tips while engaging in cycling during Ramadan, which can be draining:

  1. Timing – A bit of flexibility might help. Do it when you feel you have the energy and can do it with intensity is better than a workout you squeeze in and do hurriedly. The best time to workout is about just before iftar (the meal that breaks the fast). If you wake up to eat suhoor and don’t mind waking up about an hour early, this can be a great time to get in any workout, since you can eat as soon as you are done.
  2. Ramadan is not a time to be pushing yourself hard. You can do indoor training by putting your bike on an indoor bike trainer or smart trainers for short workouts
  3. Do keep workouts short, about 30 minutes to a maximum of 60 minutes
  4. Headache is quite common during Ramadan and if you have a headache do not continue cycling
  5. Make sure you are keeping well hydrated – before, during and after cycling. Do drink plenty of water between the hours of iftar and suhur
  6. Fruit and vegetables ensure a balanced diet and assist in keeping healthy
  7. Avoid fried and spicy food as they may cause heartburn or indigestion
  8. Lastly, organise your timetable so that you get enough sleep

Indoor bike training enables rider to increase the strength and stamina when riding outdoor is not an option due some reasons such unfavorable weather condition, in consistent of working time, etc. However, indoor bike training could be dull if just looking the number displaying on cycle-computer or training apps on your smart devices (smartphone, smart watch, Garmin, etc).

The recent popular indoor bike training software (game) company, Zwift has revolutionized the indoor training experience. Zwift is using VR (virtual reality) technology enables rider to immerse themselves in an experience as outdoor cycling. You can send message, can react the avatar during the training.

What is Zwift?

“Zwift is an online, immersive, 3D gaming and fitness experience created for cyclists. Your digital destination for fitness, fun, and adventure.”

Zwift also says that the game can be better than outdoor riding, where “weather, traffic, time constraints and distance from other cyclists can take the fun out of it.” We’re not sure about that, but if it’s wet or cold outside, then an online world may well be preferable.

What are the equipments required to play Zwift?

In order to play Zwift in more immersive environment, you have to get an interactive indoor smart trainer (Tacx Neo Smart, Tacx Bushido Smart, Tacx Ironman, Elite Rampa Smart Trainer, etc). This device enables the 3rd party software (e.g. Zwift) to control your bike trainer resistance, thereby simulating the gradient changes and other environment factors such as wind, road conditions (uneven road, cobble stones).

Zwift + iOS Devices

Zwift has launched the application for iOS deviceS in 2016. Zwift can pair directly with iPad and iPhone using bluetooth smart connectivity. How about Android user? Zwift still working on this.

Laptop / Desktop + Zwift + Ant+ Dongle

Zwift can also pair with your desktop or laptop using Ant+ Dongle (receiver) which cost RM90-RM199. Ant+ Dongle is required to place close enough to the trainer to avoid signal interruption during training.

What are the minimum computer requirements?

OS: Windows 7 x64 bit, OSX 10.7
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4GB
Graphics: 1GB dedicated GPU, or embedded Intel HD 4000/AMD R5
Hard Drive: 4GB of free space

What if no interactive smart trainer?

Yes. You still can play Zwift using your current indoor bike trainer (non-smart) e.g. Tacx Satori Smart, Tacx Bluematic, Minoura B60-R, etc. You need to get speed cadence sensor whether in ANT+ or Bluetooth smart connectivity. It just has no gradient change interaction from Zwift (other 3rd party software) to the trainer. You have to manually trigger the resistance lever when gradient is changing.

How to install Zwift?

You can download Zwift from App Store. It is available for both Windows & Mac OS. You are require to create your account, rider details are important such as gender, height, weight which will be used to give accurate measurement of speed & power in the game.

The next step is to set up your avatar to give some nice kit and your bike. New player won’t have that many jerseys and bikes to choose from. The more achievements gain and move up through the levels, letting you unlock more outfits, bikes and wheels.

Then, you are prompted to pair Zwift with any ANT+ or Bluetooth Smart device (smartphone, tablet). At that point you’re ready to play.

Where can I ride in Zwift?

  • Watopia South Pacific Paradise. [ 8 routes, 41.64 of road, 516m peak elevation ]
  • London 2016 Prudential Ridelondon Course [ 5 routes, 19.9 of road, 155m peak elevation]
  • Richmon 2015 UCI World Road Race [4 routes, 18.9 of road, 65m peak elevation]

Joining the group ride or event race Zwift

The fun part of using Zwift as indoor training is that you can join a group ride or event race in Zwift. Usually the race event calendar will updated by ZwiftHQ few days before the race. Hence, you have to check the Official Zwift event calendar.

After register, you can continue your current ride. The joint event button will pop up usually 15mins before the race.

Zwift Workout Training

Zwift has rolled out a workout training feature. Each workout can help you achieve a fitness goal. There are two options for selecting workout sessions. Firstly, you can create your own workout version using Zwift Workout editor which is drag and drop interface. Secondly, select the pre-made workouts, do a FTP (Functional Threshold Power) test.

How much does it cost for subscription?

Zwift introduced a monthly fee of USD $10 but you can get 7 days free when registering.

There are so many different type of bicycle tyres out there for road bikes and it can be confusing. If you have ridden on the cycle-lane of the Federal Highway, Kesas, Kuala Kelawang; then you would be very much aware of the roughness of our Malaysian roads, the sudden odd camber corners, uphill and downhill, inconsiderate drivers and the list goes on! Tyres matter! It keeps us safe and gives us the great pleasure of cycling we all truly love.

TYRE CONSTRUCTION

tyre-construction

Carcass/Casing – It is the main “frame” of the tyre. It gives the tyre its shape and it’s ride characteristics. It is generally made of complex weave of textile material before covered in a layer of rubber. Generally, the greater the density of the weave, the more supple the tyre, the most comfortable and faster the tyre will roll.
Bead – It gives the tyre its diameter and makes sure it stay seated on the rim securely. Folding bead is more lighter wire bead type of tyres.
Thread/Tread – Is the contact patch of the tyre that provides the grip and traction. The tyre’s rubber compound gives the tyre its rolling and grip characteristics.

SIZES

tyre-size

Tyre sizes can get confusing but we shall simplify into: Width x Diameter. Most manufacturers follow the French and ISO (ERTRO) measurement system. Here is an image that clearly states the measurements in both standards. Tyres and tubes will have either these two measurement system written on it. Road bike tyres run on 700C (622mm) in diameter.

Road bike tyre widths can range between 23C – 38C (23mm – 38mm) and the tyre widths that your bicycle can use is limited to the bicycle fork, brakes and frame design. Modern road bikes are generally equipped with 25C wide tyres and some can be as wide as 28C – 30C. Carefully check for clearance highlighted in the below image; notice that bikes equipped with disk brakes have wider clearances compared to those equipped with rim brakes.

TYPES

type-of-road-tyres

Anyone wanting to replace their road bike tyre can get overwhelmed with the number of choices that is given to you. Below are the types of tyres available to cyclists.

Clincher

specialized-sw-turbo-tires
Specialized Sworks Turbo Tires 700×23/25/28c

Clincher tyres are the most common type of tyres for the average cyclist. A rubber tube is inserted into the rim and a rubber tyre wraps around that. Air is pumped into the tube to provide support to the tyre using positive air pressure. Clincher tyres are the most common and is the easiest to repair if you suffer a puncture while on the road. Clincher tyres are also the most affordable.

Tubular

vittoria-corsa-2-tubular
Vittoria Corsa Tubular 700x25c

Tubular tyres have the tyre and the tube sewn together as a single piece. Tubular tyres are generally the lightest and there are several studies that shows that these tyres spin the fastest, and you can run really low air pressures however you need to glue it on special rims to use it. The tyres are generally the most expensive and hardest to mount on the rims as there is no bead and glue is required.

Tubeless

specialized-turbo-tires-tubeless-1
Specialized S-Works Turbo Tubeless Tires

Tubeless tyre technology comes from the automotive sector where there is no tube in the rim. The air pressure is held in the tyres by the bead of the tyre holding firmly on the rim. Special sealant is pumped in to help seal any punctures. Tubeless tyres are the most puncture resistant although tubeless tyres are expensive and mounting them can be a messy and difficult affair!

NOTE: Please make sure your wheel rim is tubeless compatibility before get tubeless tires.

Today we feature Alex and his first road bike – A 2016 Specialized Allez E5 Sport which was purchased at USJ Cycles early this year. We were intrigued by its use and the condition of the bike. Alex’s Allez is his do-it-all bike where he commutes to work on the weekdays and during the weekends he goes out on his training rides. His weekly mileage of 200KM which consists of 30KM of daily commuting as well as 50KM of training ride on the weekends is easily handled by the Allez. Alex liked the geometry of the bike and he enjoys the standard Specialized Body Geometry (BG) Saddle – Toupe Sport which allows him to be comfortable on longer rides. He also commented that the standard wheelset of Axis Classic 2.0 with wide 700x25C Specialized Espoir tyres rolls very well and is very hardy especially traversing through the porthole ridden cycle-lane on the Federal Highway. He has not experienced any puncture nor does he need to true the wheels since the bike was bought.

Here are several reasons why Alex chose Specialized Allez E5 to kick start his journey on Road Bike

I have a very strict budget of between RM3,000 – RM4,000 and I wanted a bike that can do it all. On top of commuting, I ride for fun on the weekends and I have plans to do a Triathlon in the near future so this bike will also act as a Tri-bike for me. I did a lot of research online and considered buying used bikes but in the end I’ve decided on the Allez E5 Sport. I’ve also ridden an Allez whilst overseas and really liked the feel and fit of the bike. I’ll definitely be keeping the bike for the long term!

Reason 1: Value for Money
Although there are other brands that will give better components for the same price, the quality of a Specialized bike is second to none. A lifetime frame warranty is also a major attraction.

Reason 2: Frame Geometry
Smooth welds, stiff frame for fast acceleration and excellent handling! Very confidence inspiring!

Reason 3: Maintenance
External cable routing allows easy maintenance. Shimano threaded bottom bracket also is easier to maintain than press fit.

Reason 4: Looks
It’s a very good looking bike! Nice matte black color!

Some quick bike maintenance tips to beginner rider:

  • Always keep your bike clean. Give it a wash once a week.
  • Always Check your chain, cables, derailleurs. Degrease and re-lube when necessary.
  • Don’t over lube. Clean excess lube from chain always.
